Damaged cardiac tissue. Artwork of damaged heart fibres and cells in heart muscle tissue (myocardium). This can occur due to reduced blood supply (ischaemia). In severe cases, it can lead to tissue death (necrosis) that is known as an infarct. This occurs during a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The lack of blood supply makes this area appear darker than the surrounding live tissue.
