Minefields were laid by the Rhodesian army along the northern and eastern borders of Zimbabwe at the height of the war of liberation between 1976 and 1979. They were sited on movement corridors likely to be used by the Zimbabwe Peoples Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) and the Zimbabwe African Liberation Army (ZANLA) forces, with the aim to prevent their movement from safe bases in Mozambique and Zambia.
