Loss of the 'Birkenhead' iron paddle-steamer troopship which sailed from Queenstown (Cobh) Ireland for Cape of Good Hope 7 January 1852 Foundered off Simon's Bay South Africa 26 February. Of 638 souls on board only 184 saved by the boats. Commanding officer Colonel Seton gave the order 'Women and children first' and troops stood in line on deck as if on parade and waited their fate. Early 20th century colour-printed engraving.
