AUSTRALIA. Western Australia, vicinity Perth. Enormous amounts of salt lie in Australias inland soils When forest are cleared and land turned into pasture or used to grow annual crops, the water table rises to the surface bringing salt with it. This is because trees pump more water out of the soil than wheat or grass. This land is prone to erosion. Its estimated that for every kilo of bread produced in Australia, seven kilos of top soil are lost forever. Close-up of salt deposited on soil.
