The illustration shows the Titanic during her one and only visit to the French port of Cherbourg on the evening of Wednesday, April 10, 1912, having sailed from Southampton. Her hundreds of portholes are described as producing a kind of shimmering glow upon the darkness of the surrounding water. The ship,built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast Ireland during 1910 - 1911, sank on April 16th 1912 after striking an iceberg off the coast of New Foundland during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York, USA, with the loss of 1,522 passengers and crew.
