The Rio Grande River, looking upstream, or westerly, at the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon, near Castolon, Texas, Big Bend National Park. Heartland of the Mescalero Apache, this was the last, most remote frontier along the Mexican Border. The Apache held that the Great Spirit, having completed making the Earth, used the Big Bend as a dumping ground for leftover rocks.
