Fermilab power supply. The blue and orange device is a capacitor, among the largest in the world. It stores electrical power for the accelerator at Fermilab, the US National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab, founded in 1967, is located in Batavia, Illinois, USA. The main accelerator ring (the Tevatron) is the most powerful in the world (as of 2005), colliding particles at energies of 1.8 TeV. Magnetic fields to guide the particle beam use a current of 4000 amperes. Cooling the magnets uses 13 megawatts of power. The annual electricity bill is $12-18 million. Particle physics experiments at Fermilab have detected fundamental particles such as the top and bottom quarks and the tau neutrino.
