Construction work at the SSC. View of the first magnet delivery shaft of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) particle physics laboratory. The 72-metre deep shaft will be used to deliver the magnets of the SSC accelerator rings to the level of the 87-km 'racetrack'-shaped tunnel. Two accelerator rings, mounted one above the other in the single tunnel, are due to be completed by the end of 1999. They will be used to collide protons at energies of up to 40 TeV (1TeV = 1000 billion electron Volts). In total, over 12, 000 magnets - most of which are 15. 8 metres long - will be required.
