ALICE detector magnets during construction. ALICE is A Large Ion Collider Experiment" for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The internal space (full of scaffolding) will contain the rest of the detector which will be inserted by opening the magnet doors seen. The central hole in the doors will allow ALICE to be placed around part of the 27-kilometre-long underground LHC ring that will accelerate ion beams to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles whose decay products will be detected. A magnet is required to detect charged particles. The LHC is scheduled to start operating in 2007."
