Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of graphite. Graphite exists as a natural form of the element carbon, composed of sheets of hexagonal crystals. It is very soft (1-2 on the hardness scale), light & with a greasy feel. Graphite is found in high-grade metamorphic rocks as a final product of the carbonization of organic material. Graphite is a very good conductor of electricity & is used industrially in electrodes, as a dry lubricant, & in pencils & dyes. Magnification: x7 at 6x6cm size.
