MODEL RELEASED. Superconducting magnet. Technician winding a superconducting wire onto a coil for use as a magnet. The magnet may be used in magnetic resonance imaging, particle accelerators, or a crystal puller for microchip manufacture. Superconductors are materials which have no electrical resistance when cooled below a certain temperature. This means that no heat is generated in the wire when an electric current is passed through it. Electromagnetic fields are created around a wire when a current flows through it. The use of superconductors allows the creation of larger fields because no electrical power is lost as heat in the wire.
