Volcano effect by thermal dissociation. A sample of ammonium dichromate powder (orange) dissociating by heat. When heat is applied to the powder, the ammonium dichromate breaks down to form dark green flakes of chromic oxide and nitrogen gas. The evolution of the gas combined with the heat from this exothermic reaction makes the chromic oxide flakes fly into the air in the famous 'volcano effect'.
