Phenol reactions. Phenol (carbolic acid, C6H5OH) dissolved in water (H2O, left), forming a milky solution. An alkali is added (centre), which neutralises the solution. It is then acidified (right) forming a milky solution again. Phenol is used in the manufacture of nylon, dyes and explosives.
