Decolouration of bromine. Test for the presence of alkenes. Two test tubes showing bromine water before and after decolouration with hexene. When hexene is added to bromine water in sunlight, the weakly bonded bromine splits into free radicals. The bromine then adds to the hexene at its double bonds, forming dibromohexene, a clear liquid.
