Copper sulphate reaction. Solution of copper sulphate (CuSO4) before (left) and after (right) the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. At left the copper II ions (Cu2-) in copper sulphate solution give the blue colour. Addition of hydrochloric acid leads to the formation of tetrachlorocuprate II complex ions ((CuCl4)2-) and their yellow colour mixed with the blue of the copper ions produces the green solution.
