Flame test on strontium. Strontium compounds give a distinctive red colour when placed in a flame. Strontium (symbol Sr) is a metallic element of group two of the periodic table. Flame tests are used to identify metal ions in a compound, as many metal ions show specific different colours. A platinum wire is used to hold the sample, as platinum does not itself colour a flame.
