Dopamine molecule. Computer artwork of a molecule of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The atoms are colour-coded: carbon (blue), nitrogen (yellow), oxygen (red) and hydrogen (white). This is one of the most important of the neurotransmitters found in the central nervous system (CNS). Underproduction of dopamine in the CNS results in the movement disorder known as Parkinson's disease. Excess dopamine may contribute to psychotic illnesses, notably schizophrenia. Many drugs act on dopamine nerve terminals, including the anti-psychotic chlorpromazine, and the hallucinogen mescaline.
