Phenol. Molecular model of the historical anti- bacterial agent phenol, also called carbolic acid (formula: C6H6O). The atoms are colour-coded: carbon (blue), hydrogen (white) and oxygen (red). Phenol is obtained from coal tar. By itself, it is extremely destructive to living tissue, and its use as a disinfectant and antibacterial agent has ceased since safer alternatives have appeared.
