New material. A technologist removing a sample of cermet from a furnace. Cermet is a new type of composite material made from boron carbide (the CERamic) and aluminium ( the METal). The material is heated to 800 Celsius inside the furnace seen here; the two materials mix to form a matrix by a process called molten metal infiltration. When cooled, the cermet is lighter than aluminium but stronger than steel.
