Macrophotograph of woven glass fibres. Fine fibres of glass are woven into sheets like this for use in the reinforcing of plastics. The sheets are laid inside a mould and are impregnated with a plastic resin. When dry, the finished material is known as 'Fibreglass', or GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic). This material has a wide variety of uses, including the manufacture of boats and aircraft, where its high strength to weight ratio is beneficial.
