Mathematical model. Computer model of a repeated mathematical operation (iteration) called mapping. Mathematical mapping involves repeating rules that tell you how to change the original object. The rules may say where the point should move to, and what the new colour should be. This can produce patterns of great complexity from simple origins. This map started as several circles of different colours on a black background. The iteration was carried out 16 times, resulting in the whirlpools of colour seen here. The resulting pattern has been compared to convective cells on the surface of the Sun. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller.
