The threadlike structures running the length of the chloroplast are grana, stacks of flattened membranes that contain the photosynthetic pigments, or chlorophylls. These pigments absorb & convert the sun's energy into the chemical energy required by the plant. The faint white patches within the chloroplast are called nucleoids, where chloroplast DNA is stored.
