False-colour transmisson electron micrograph of a chloroplast in a leaf cell of the garden pea Pisum sativum. In its centre is a starch granule coloured blue. The yellow areas in the chloroplast are nucleoids where the DNA of chloroplasts is found. Strands running through the chloroplast are grana. These are stacks of lamella that contain the chlorophyll pigments responsible for the process of photosynthesis. The brown line at right is the cell wall dividing two cells. The clear yellow areas are vacuoles while the speckled red areas in the cytoplasm are ribosomes. The larger red bodies are mitochondria. Magnificaton: x1500 at 6x4.5cm size
