Macrophotograph of the tentacles of the carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia, the sundew, which extend from the leaf surface & are tipped with a sticky secretion. The tentacles are of two kinds; longer marginal ones & shorter inner ones. Insects, attracted by the secretion, become stuck to the tips of the longer tentacles, which bend over bringing the insect towards the shorter ones, forming a tight grip. Proteolytic enzymes secreted by the tentacles digest the insect & the products are absorbed by the leaf. Drosera grows in a nitrogen deficient environment (bogs), which it overcomes by a carnivorous diet.
