Ryonji garden. Rocks in the 'karessanui' (rock garden) at the Ryonji temple, Kyoto, Japan. Ryonji is a Zen Buddhist temple. The garden consists of an arrangement of fifteen rocks placed on fine raked white gravel. The rocks are arranged so that only fourteen can be seen at once, whichever angle the garden is viewed from. The spiritual basis for this design is the belief that only when enlightenment is attained can the fifteenth rock be seen with the mind's eye.
