Scanning electron micrograph (SEM), tinted green, of a tomato leaf, Lycopersicon esculentum, sho the hairs (long & tapering) & trichomes (toadstool- like) that cover the surface. Trichome is the name given to any outgrowth of the leaf epidermis, and in this case refers to these glandular protuberances topped by four cells which secrete a resin. The resin contains chemicals which are unpleasant or irritating to predatory insects. The epidermal cells form a quilted carpet beneath the trichomes, each patch corresponding to an individual cell. Magnification: X 70 at 35mm size. Original is BW print B745/047.
