Leaf cell rehydration (1 week). Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the leaf mesophyll cells of a resurrection plant (Selaginella lepidophylla). The cells are shown a week after the plant was watered. The vacuoles (white) have grown as they have filled with water. Mesophyll cells produce sugar using sunlight (photosynthesis) in their large chloroplasts (dark grey). This plant, a type of primitive vascular plant known as a spike moss, grows in the desert. It is called the resurrection plant as it can remain brown and brittle until rain falls, when it becomes green and supple. Magnification: x9500 at 7.5x8 inch size.
