This flower is actually a cluster of tiny individual flowers, or florets. The white "petals" are sterile ray florets. The yellow florets are fertile, those in the outer ring maturing earliest to expose pollen- bearing anthers to insects. The yellow florets are arranged in two sets of interlocking spirals: 21 clockwise and 34 anticlockwise. The numbers 21 & 34 are adjacent in the Fibonacci series of numbers (1, 2, 3, 5, 8...), where summing adjacent numbers gives the next in the series. Fibonacci spirals are also seen in pine cones and pineapple bumps."
