Lenten rose. Macrophotograph of a flower of the lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis) showing its reproductive parts. The flower's pollen is held on the male stamens, long filaments tipped with white pollen- bearing heads (anthers). The green spikes coming from the centre of the flower are stigmas, onto which pollen is transferred by insects. Pollen grains grow through the stigma, down the style to the ovaries to fertilise the female sex cells. Around the base of the reproductive parts are several tubular nectaries. These glands produce and store nectar, a sweet solution which attracts pollinating insects. Magnification: x1 at 35mm size.
