These form part of the male reproductive structures of the plant (stamens). The anthers, which are fused at their tips (top right), produce the plant's pollen (not seen). The male sex cells in the pollen grains fertilise the female sex cells (ovules, not seen) held in the ovary. The ovary and its surrounding tissues may then ripen to form a fruit containing seeds.
