Elder plant pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (yellow) from an elder plant (Sambucus sp.). Pollen grains contain the male sex cells of a flowering plant. Millions of pollen grains are produced by each flowering plant. In the process of pollination, some of these pollen grains are transported from a flower's anthers to the female reproductive parts of a plant. This allows the female and male sex cells to combine in the formation of a seed. Elder plants (which produce elderberries) are found in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
