Macrophotograph of the top of a ripe, dehiscent seed capsule (fruit) of the field or corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, showing the release of numerous blue-black seeds from window-like pores in the top of the dried- out capsule. The seed capsule comprises the remains of the flower after the petals have fallen; the old stigma (starfish- shaped) is seen at top. When the capsule has fully ripened, mature seeds are released by the organized process of dehiscence (dehydration & splitting). At this time the pericarp, the capsu wall, is dead & hard.
