False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a seedling of the cabbage plant Golden Acre, a brassica. The picture clearly shows the seed (green), the split seed coat or testa (orange), & the root covered with root hairs. Root hairs are short-lived, delicate structures. Roots grow from the tip, & new hairs are continually produced from a region just behind it. The process is clearly visible here: near the root tip, the hairs are young & short; further away they are longer. Magnification: x6 at 6x4.5cm size.
