DNA electrophoresis. Sample of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) on an electrophoresis gel, which is being observed under ultraviolet (UV) light. The DNA sample was labelled with a chemical marker that makes the fragments fluoresce under UV light. The fragments (coloured bands) were separated by applying an electric current across the gel. Some fragments moved faster through the gel, forming the banded pattern seen.
