John Bardeen (b.1908), US physicist and double Nobel Laureate. Bardeen was born into an academic family, and got his degree in electrical engineering. He obtained his doctorate in mathematical physics at Harvard in 1936. In 1947, at Bell Laboratories, he co-invented the point contact transistor, for which he shared the 1956 Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1951 he moved to the University of Illinois. Working with Cooper and Schreiffer, Bardeen contributed to a quantum mechanical model to explain the concept of superconductivity. The BCS theory won all three researchers the 1972 Nobel Prize for Physics, Bardeen becoming the first double Physics winner.
