Sir Hermann Bondi (1919-2005), Austrian-British mathematical physicist. Bondi was born in Vienna, receiving his schooling there. He later studied at Cambridge, and in 1954 was appointed Professor of Mathematics at King's College, London. Since 1983 he has been Master of Churchill College, Cambridge. Bondi, along with Gold and Hoyle, was a proponent of the steady-state theory of cosmology. This proposes that the universe looks the same at all times, has unchanging density, and that matter is created spontaneously from empty space as the universe expands. The theory has no beginning or end of time, unlike the more-favoured 'Big Bang' theory. Photographed in 1993.
