Baruj Benacerraf (born 1920), Venezualan-born US physician, immunologist, cancer researcher and Nobel laureate. Benacerraf was of Spanish Jewish ancestry and born in Venezuala, but grew up in France. In 1940 he moved to the US to study at university, eventually training to be a doctor. He became a US citizen in 1943. His research career was spent in France and the USA. Benacerraf shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Jean Dausset and George D. Snell. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Benacerraf's work on immunology at the cellular level, in particular for discovering the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Photograph published in 1976.
