Nehemiah Grew. Engraving of Nehemiah Grew (1641- 1712), British botanist and anatomist. He wrote Anatomy of Plants (1682) the first complete account of plant anatomy and the authoritative work on the subject for the next 150 years. Using a microscope he discovered the difference between root and stem tissue and described the folding of leaves within an unopened bud. Grew also noted that the stamen was the male organ of the plant. The illustrations in his book were also a major advance in botany. He coined the terms parenchyma for a plant's ground tissue and the cambium layer in the stem. In 1681 he also wrote the pioneering Comparative Anatomy of the Stomach and Guts.
