Part of a late 19th century chocolate box or wrapper depicting French engineer Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834). Jacquard was the first to use punched cards to control machinery, inventing an automated loom capable of weaving figured fabrics. Silk bearing a woven-in design is still referred to as Jacquard silk.
