Cesar Milstein (b.1927), Argentinian-British molecular biologist and Nobel Laureate. Milstein was born in Argentina, and spent his early career at Buenos Aires. In 1963 he took up a post at Cambridge with the Medical Research Council. His work on immunoglobulin led to his discovery of monoclonal antibodies (MCA). MCAs are produced by injecting an antigen into an animal, then later removing antibody-rich B-lymphocytes from the spleen. These are then fused with malignant cells, which can result in an immortal cell line capable of producing large quantities of pure antibody. Milstein shared the 1984 Nobel Prize for Physiology for this work. Photographed in 1993.
