Prof. Carlo Rubbia, Italian physicist at the CERN particle physics laboratory, Geneva. He won the 1984 Nobel Prize for physics for his role in the 1983 discovery of the W & Z particles, which are the mediators of the weak nuclear force. They were discovered at the giant UA1 detector built by Rubbia's team at CERN. The photo shows Rubbia with a UA1 display of a Z particle event superimposed. The Z lives too briefly to be visible, but its existence is deduced from the 2 muons (white tracks) into which it decays along with other particles (yellow & green tracks). Rubbia was born in 1934 at Gorizia, on the Italian-Yugoslav border. Photo was taken at CERN in September 1984.
