Bertrand Russell. Historical portrait of the British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970), the third Earl of Russell. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and became a fellow there in 1895. His major work the Principia Mathematica (1910-1913), with Alfred Whitehead, is considered a milestone in mathematical logic. During World War I he was an active pacifist, a stance he renounced with the rise of Fascism in the 1930s. He wrote extensively on philosophy and education, founding a progressive school with his second wife. After World War II he wrote at length to world leaders, arguing for nuclear disarmament.
