Charles Sherrington. 1927 portrait of the eminent English neurologist Sir Charles Sherrington (1857- 1952), who won the 1932 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for his work on the nervous system. Sherrington's main work was on reflex motor nerve action in vertebrates. A whole range of neurological terms were coined by him, including synapse, motor unit, neuron pool and others. His book The Integrative Action of the Nervous System (1906) is a landmark in modern physiology. He was elected President of the Royal Society of London in 1920 and knighted in 1922. Among his many sporting hobbies were Sunday morning parachute jumps off the tower of a London hospital.
