Ernest Starling. Portrait of English physiologist and pioneer endocrinologist, Ernest Henry Starling (1866- 1927). Starling largely spent his career at University College, London. Much of his best- known work was done with W. M. Bayliss who was also professor of physiology in the same college. They discovered the peristaltic waves of the intestine. Studying the pancreas, they showed that its digestive juices are secreted due to a chemical messenger in the blood. In 1905, Starling coined the term hormone", and the field of endocrinology was created. Starling also studied the cardio- vascular system and his "law of the heart" enables heart damage to be detected by heart enlargement."
