Friedrich Stromeyer (1776-1835), German chemist. Stromeyer is remembered as the discoverer of the metallic element cadmium. He isolated it in 1817 while he was working in Gottingen, Germany. Cadmium is used in batteries and its compounds used to be used as a pigment. It is highly toxic, however, and its use is being phased out.
