Professor Miodrag Stojkovic (born 1964), embryonic stem cell researcher, in his laboratory at the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Stojkovic was born in Serbia, but left the former Yugoslavia in 1991 just before the Balkan wars. He worked in Munich for over ten years, but moved to the UK in 2002 to continue his stem cell research. The UK Human Fertility and Embryology Authority has given him and his colleagues permission to use cloning techniques to create embryos to obtain embryonic stem cells. Research using these stem cells, which can develop into different tissue types, may help cure diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's.
