Archbishop Ussher's book. Frontispiece of Annales Veteris et Novi Testamenti (Annals of the Old and New Testaments, 1650), in which he set the date of the biblical creation as 23rd October 4004 BC. James Ussher (1581-1656) was an Irish protestant who served as archbishop of Armagh, Ireland, from 1625. This work greatly influenced religious thinking. It is now thought that creation (the Big Bang) occurred between 12-20 billion years ago.
