MODEL RELEASED. Organic chemistry experiment. Two students monitoring the temperature of an oil bath being used to heat a reaction vessel. An electric heater is heating the oil (yellow) in the beaker. A round-bottomed flask is immersed in the oil and contains sodium bromide, butanol and concentrated sulphuric acid. An oil bath allows heating to over the butanol's boiling point (116 degrees Celsius). The gases are prevented from escaping by the condensor (tube held in clamp), which is cooled by water (supplied in orange tubes). This vertical use of a condenser is known as reflux. The product of the reaction is bromobutane.
