View of the scanning transmission soft X-ray microscope built at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island. The microscope uses a Fresnel zoneplate to focus the X-rays, and has produced the first scanning X-ray micrographs of biological specimens with submicron resolution (1983). The photograph shows the heart of the microscope (bottom right) at the end of the X- ray beam line. A small telescope for precise alignment is seen in the bottom right corner.
