MODEL RELEASED. Nostradamus radar system. Juanito Munoz (left), tracking specialist at the French National Office of Aerospace Study and Research (ONREA), checking the antennae of Nostradamus, a transhorizon radar system. Nostradamus is composed of 288 conical antennae, positioned over three 400 metre-long branches. Nostradamus is capable of detecting aircraft flying 700-2000 kilometres away. The system uses low frequency waves (6-30 MHz), which bounce off the ionosphere (outer layer of the Earth's atmosphere) and allow the radar to detect targets beyond the horizon.
